రెండా? వేల కొద్ది ఆకారాలు… అదే అమెరికాలోని ఆర్చెస్‌ నేషనల్ పార్క్!
ఆకాశంలో మేఘాలు రకరకాల ఆకారాలుగా కనిపిస్తేనే సంబరపడతాం. అలాంటిది వేలాది
ఎకరాల్లో విస్తరించిన ప్రదేశంలో శిలలన్నీ అద్భుతమైన రూపాల్లో ఉంటే ఎలా
ఉంటుంది? అలా అబ్బురపరిచే ప్రాంతమే అమెరికాలోని ఆర్చెస్‌ నేషనల్ పార్కు.
అక్కడ ఎటు చూసినా కనిపించేది సాండ్‌స్టోన్‌ పరుచుకున్న ప్రదేశమే. ఇదంతా
కోట్లాది ఏళ్లుగా ప్రకృతిలో ఏర్పడిన మార్పుల వల్ల రకరకాల ఆకారాలను
సంతరించుకుని ఆశ్చర్యపరుస్తూ కనిపిస్తాయి. కొన్ని గుడి గోపురాల్లా ఉంటే, మరి
కొన్ని చర్చి శిఖరాల్లా ఉంటాయి. ఇక పుట్టలు, మెలికలు తిరిగే వంపులు,
గుమ్మటాల్లాంటివెన్నో రూపాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. మీకు సహజ శిలా తోరణమంటే తెలుసుగా?
ఒకే శిల ఈ వైపు నుంచి ఆ వైపు వరకు ఒక తోరణంలా, వంతెనలా ఏర్పడడం. ఇలాంటి
శిలాతోరణాలు ఇక్కడ ఏకంగా రెండువేలకు పైగా కనిపిస్తాయి. అందుకే దీన్ని
ఆర్చెస్‌ నేషనల్ పార్క్ అంటారు. ఇక్కడుండే శిలాతోరణాల్లో అతి పెద్దది ఏకంగా
290 అడుగుల వరకు వెడల్పుతో ఉంటే, చిన్నవి మూడు అడుగుల వెడల్పుతో చూడముచ్చటగా
ఉంటాయి.
అమెరికాలోని ఉతా (Utah)లో విస్తరించిన ఈ అందాల ప్రదేశం విస్తీర్ణం ఎంతో
తెలుసా? 76 వేల ఎకరాల పైనే. దాదాపు 30 కోట్ల ఏళ్ల కిత్రం ఈ ప్రదేశమంతా
సముద్రంతో నిండి ఉండేదని చెబుతారు. ఆ సముద్రం భౌగోళిక మార్పుల వల్ల
ఇగిరిపోయింది. అందుకనే ఇక్కడి భూగర్భమంతా ఉప్పు మేటలు, ఇసుకరాతి శిలలతో కూడి
ఉంటుంది. క్రమంగా ఇవి గట్టిపడిపోయి సాండ్‌స్టోన్‌ గుట్టలుగా మారింది.
కాలక్రమేణా గాలులు, వర్షాల కోత వల్ల ఈ శిలలన్నీ వింత ఆకారాల్లోకి
మారిపోయాయన్నమాట.
ఇక్కడి శిలాతోరణాల్లో డెలికేట్ ఆర్చ్‌ ఎంతో అందమైనదిగా పేరొందింది. 52
అడుగుల ఎత్తుతో ఉండే ఈ తోరణంలో నుంచి 2002లో శీతాకాల ఒలింపిక్స్‌ టార్చిని
పట్టుకెళ్లారు. గతంలో ఈ ఆకారాలపైకి రాక్ క్త్లెంబింగ్‌కు అనుమతి ఇచ్చేవారు.
కానీ అవి దెబ్బతింటున్నాయన్న కారణంగా వీటిపైకి ఎక్కనివ్వడంలేదు. 1929 నుంచి
ప్రభుత్వం ఈ ప్రాంతాన్ని పర్యాటక ప్రదేశంగా ప్రకటించింది. ఏటా సుమారు 8 లక్షల
పర్యాటకులు ఈ ప్రాంతాన్ని సందర్శిస్తారు.

Natural Arches in Arches National Park
Located directly at Moab´s doorstep, we visit Arches National Park the
next morning, where you´ll find more than 2,000 natural stone arches.
Looking at the magnificent beauty and perfect shape of them it‘s hard to
believe that these arches are a work of natural erosion alone. Nowhere
else in the world will you find so many of these natural wonders. We hike
through the Windows section of the park, easily accessible and perfectly
suitable for families. Absolutely fascinated by these sights, we return in
the evening to visit the arguably most famous arch, Delicate Arch. At the
end of our 45-minute hike, we‘re rewarded by a sunset that soaks this
graceful and elegant natural wonder in a magical red-orange light.
Hummer Tour along the Hells Revenge Trail
Early the next morning, we booked a tour on a monstrous Hummer jeep, the
perfect vehicle to discover some of the not as easily accessible areas
around Moab. And so we´re off, only minutes away from downtown, driving
over petrified sand dunes and steep cliffs following a trail with the
scary name “Hells Revenge”. As we go over giant boulders we get a good
shaking, but cheer with joy. More than once, we have the impression that
our Hummer may not be able to take on this steep stone ascent. But it can
– and the mighty wheels of our Hummer take us over high plains with
fantastic views.
Sunrise at the Canyonlands National Park
The next morning we´re off early to Dead Horse Point State Park, from
which you have a great view of the adjacent Canyonlands National Park. In
complete darkness we stand on the rim of the canyon, as the daily magical
scene begins. Slowly the rising sun casts light onto the park in front of
us and reveals landscapes that make me catch my breath. Kilometers and
kilometers of red shimmering canyons are revealed in front of us, through
which the Colorado River has found its way deep down below.
After these magical views we drive to the nearby visitor‘s center at Dead
Horse Point State Park, from where we continue with mountain bikes. There
are several trails around here, some perfectly suitable for families, that
lead through sandy paths and over boulders and are a lot of fun to
explore.
Paddleboarding and Kayaking on the Colorado
The next morning, we drive along the Colorado River until we reach the
Red Cliffs Lodge, beautifully located directly on the river and surrounded
by majestic cliffs. From here we paddle a little with kayak and
paddleboards along a more peaceful stretch of the Colorado with only a few
rapids. Not far from here, the rapids are, depending on the time of the
year, much more fierce and perfectly suitable for a whitewater rafting
tour.
The Red Cliffs Lodge is also home to a little museum, dedicated to the
history of the many films and commercials that were shot in this area that
displays fascinating memorabilia.
