Importance of  Storytelling

Children love stories. Stories are magic, they can create other worlds, emotions, ideas and transform the everyday into the incredible. They teach us empathy and can take us on amazing journeys. They can make us laugh, cry, jump in fear, and comfort us with a happy ending. From a very young age we learn how to enjoy story for pleasure and to help us understand the world and ourselves. In this article I will look at why stories are important to ESL students and I will share some simple story-based activities that are appropriate for different ages and abilities.

Stories in class

Classroom stories have a special place and value. Students can hear the sounds and rhythms of English just as native speakers do to acquire their first language. Students can identify vocabulary and expressions they have learned or heard regularly and see them in use. Saying it often helps them learn new phrases and expressions with the right emotional resonance. Participatory storytelling uses experiential learning to ask the characters what is happening and what they should do next, or gives the student the opportunity to be that character and hear/say their words in a real context.

Storytelling brings language learning to life and creates a shared and immersive experience that allows young learners to enjoy listening to language in a dynamic, sometimes stylized and entertaining way. Awareness of rhythm and structure is developed through participation using key vocabulary and phrases. This atmosphere of play and creative expression creates an appetite for more similar experiences. Students who enjoy storytelling in class often ask for more stories and are inspired and encouraged to create and tell, act out, or illustrate their own stories in different ways.

Storytelling activity appeals to different learning preferences and personalities, from the shy to the most active students, so everyone can participate in a way they enjoy. It ranges from quiet listening to active participation.

Storytelling helps students enjoy and learn intonation and intonation, natural sounding expressions and phrases as well as interaction between native speakers. For older YLs, they are given the opportunity to retell, paraphrase, act out or summarize what they hear, rewrite a story, or create their own as a group or individually.

Stories also provide a link between the classroom and home. Students may have the same books in their own language at home; They can read with a parent or family member and recognize vocabulary in English; Parents at home can reread simple stories in English. Many articles include talking books, YouTube videos, animations or movies on VOSE that can be enjoyed after the session.

Stories give everyone a chance to enjoy language and discover new worlds, new words and new things about themselves.
